The design is an adaptation of an image taken from a page in the Gospels of St. Chad which is thought to have been created by a scribe-artist named Ultan who was located in Northumbria around 730. Though badly damaged the Gospels display a striking resemblance to the illumination in the earlier Landisfarne Gospels. |
